On 8 June 2026, we hosted the Open Water Day at Casa dos Maza in Cambados, Galicia, marking the final event of the first volunteering team of the Solidarity Shores project.
The event brought together volunteers, project partners, local stakeholders and community members to reflect on the activities carried out throughout the month and to discuss the importance of marine conservation, sustainable fisheries and the future of coastal communities.
The programme included presentations from Fundación Condado de Taboada, the Municipality of Cambados, project partners Intercultural Association for All (IAFA) and Küresel Ekoloji ve Yaşam Derneği (KEYA DER), as well as a keynote intervention by marine scientist Jesús Gago Piñeiro from the Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO-CSIC).
Participants also had the opportunity to watch the documentaries Voices of the Mariscadoras, created by the volunteers during their stay in Galicia. The event concluded with the Youthpass certificate ceremony, recognising the learning journey and contributions of the participants throughout the project.
Open Water Day served as an opportunity to share experiences, strengthen connections between local and international actors, and celebrate a month dedicated to environmental action, intercultural exchange and community engagement.
